AIF gives students exposure to how AI is changing business, then puts them to work on real projects for nonprofits across Minneapolis.
Mission
Most students spend their time in college learning concepts and formulas, but rarely get opportunities to work on problems without a predetermined answer.
AIF exists to create those opportunities. Through guest speakers, students hear directly from people using AI and technology in the real world. Then, through nonprofit projects, members apply their existing skills to real organizational challenges where their work can actually make a difference.
Our beliefs
Classroom projects are useful, but they rarely replicate the ambiguity and responsibility of solving a problem for a real organization.
AIF partners with nonprofits that have real needs and gives students the opportunity to help address them. Members gain experience working with real stakeholders and real constraints, while nonprofits gain access to students willing to put their skills to work.
The goal is simple: do useful work and become more capable in the process.
IN PRACTICE
LEARN THE TOOLS
Workshops focus on practical AI skills students can use right away — prompting, managing context, developing ideas, improving outputs, and building better finance and business workflows.
HEAR FROM INDUSTRY
Guest speakers from finance, tech, and business show how AI is being used in real roles, teams, and decision-making processes.
BUILD THROUGH PROJECTS
Members apply what they learn through student-led projects, including work with nonprofits and organizations that can benefit from better analysis, reporting, and operations.
USE AI RESPONSIBLY
We treat AI as a powerful tool, not a shortcut. AIF emphasizes accuracy, ethics, judgment, and understanding the limits and tradeoffs behind the technology.
Membership is open to every University of Minnesota student — no experience required.
